Dunwich Holiday Cottages
Dunwich is a wonderful place for a holiday at any time of the year, relaxed yet within easy reach of civilisation tucked between Aldeburgh and Southwold on the Suffolk Coast. We have a number of Dunwich holiday cottages that are suitable for all types of family and budget.
You would hardly believe that this small unspoilt coastal village was once the capital of East Anglia around 1500 years ago, or that it was at the centre of the wool trade through the Middle Ages. At the height of it’s popularity, Dunwich had an international port as large as London, 6 parish churches and a population of 3000. Unfortunately, during the 13th and 14th centuries, Dunwich was damaged by storm, driving the sea against the spit of land and shifting significant amounts of shingle that effectively blocked the harbour. This was followed by hundreds of years of coastal erosion meaning that most of the town is gone, leaving behind a rural idyll.
Today, Dunwich is a beautiful, peaceful village, and the area is ideal for walking, cycling and exploring straight from the front door of your Dunwich holiday cottage rental. You can walk for miles beneath the cliffs along the vast pebble beach, or if you head north, the cliffs are replaced by sand dunes and beach grass. Here there is a foothpath through heathland that takes you to the neighbouring village of Walberswick. Also locally is Dunwich Forest or Heath and RSPB Minsmere that is close by and very popular with bird watchers and wildlife lovers.

The popular pub, The Ship Inn, serves delicious food and local beverages, and on Dunwich beach you’ll find Flora Tea Rooms, renowned for quality fish and chips plus a fascinating museum open from April to October. Nearby in the Westleton area you’ll find a village store, post office and The Crown, also serving local beers and excellent pub food.
All of our Dunwich holiday cottages are pet friendly, meaning that you can bring your furry friend with you! We are actually one of very few agencies that don’t charge extra for bringing pets. Dogs are welcome throughout the year to Dunwich beach and also at Dunwich Heath (with some guidelines). If you would like advice on the best places to walk and visit with your dog, please get in touch with our team.
For the history buffs amongst you, the ruins of Greyfriars, the 13th century Franciscan Friary on the outskirts of the village are worth a visit. Legend says that during certain tides, at midnight you can hear the bells of the churches lost to the sea. To this day, sailors refuse to go out to sea at this time, because they believe that the chimes foretell the arrival of another storm. Also at Greyfriars, you’ll find ‘The Last Grave’, a plaque marking the place of the last surviving gravestone from All Saints Church, which fell over the eroding cliff between 1904 and 1920. Old bones still occasionally weather out from the cliff face!
