Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

A marshmallow roasting on an open fire

Bonfire Night, often known as Guy Fawkes Night, is an annual British celebration held on the 5th of November.

The 5th of November is remembered as the date of Guy Fawkes’ unsuccessful attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament. In 1605 Fawkes was captured beneath the Houses of Parliament with barrels of gunpowder.

Bonfire Night was created to commemorate this day, where effigies of Fawkes would be burnt on a bonfire and fireworks would be set off in celebration.
