A Guide to the beautiful Thorpeness & surrounding areas.

Thorpeness has a unique fairy tale charm which is conducive to relaxation, created by an eccentric Scottish barrister in the last century who then transformed it into a fantastical seaside village for London’s rich and famous.

The Meare, a shallow boating lake, is at the centre of the village, dotted with islands all inspired by the famous novel Peter Pan provide a place where families can while away the time in the summer on rowing boats and kayaks which are available for hire. Tudor and Jacobean-style buildings give a feel of a bygone era with the original water tower disguised as the quirky ‘House in the Clouds’.

One of the great attractions of Thorpeness is the heathland Golf course and Country Club with activities to suit the whole family from the 18 hole golf course, able to play on all year round, to the tennis and activities for children throughout summer.

There are a number of shops and eateries including the The Dolphin Inn, The Kitchen and a popular café next to the Meare.

Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Thorpeness offers superb walks and cycle rides and is a great base for visiting the many attractions along the Suffolk Coast, such as RSPB Minsmere, the picturesque town of Southwold with it’s colourful beach huts and Pier and Snape Maltings. The popular town of Aldeburgh with excellent restaurants, shops, art galleries and independent cinema is just a walk along the beach, past the infamous Scallop shell sculpture.
