Corner Cottage Thorpeness Tried and Tested

In this edition, our Marketing Manager Abi, her partner Adam and their three children enjoyed a sunny weekend at the stylish Corner Cottage in Thorpeness.  This active family of three ‘under sevens’ enjoyed getting out and about, exploring all that Thorpeness has to offer, and coming home to the incredibly comfortable and spacious Corner Cottage to relax in style!

From discovering the Peter-Pan themed Meare in a rowing boat, to breakfast on a secluded beach, to crazy golf, there was so much to do.  When not out exploring, there were garden games for all the family, cosy candle-lit nights in for the adults and even the FA Cup Final for two football-mad boys!

The sleeps six modern, incredibly comfortable and well-equipped Corner Cottage provided a wonderful base for the weekend.  Family and dog friendly in equal measure, everything has been thought of for your stay on the Suffolk coast.  Even better, much sought after off street parking and an incredible garden with three seating areas and brick built BBQ mean you can really make the most of your time away. Cyclists will love the covered bike storage area in the garden too!

As always with our ‘highly commended’ #TriedandTested blog series, we share the experiences of real families, in real holiday homes.  No filters, no fancy cameras, just real people enjoying real holidays.  So find out what Abi and her family got up to during their magical weekend in Thorpeness in this edition of #TriedandTested

Location, Location, Location!

Thorpeness, a charming holiday village largely designed by the Scottish playwright and barrister Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie a century ago, is just a mile and a half along the beach from Aldeburgh with it’s excellent eateries, pubs, variety of shops, art galleries and independent cinema.

Ogilvie created an idyllic model seaside village, inspired by the writings of JM Barrie, author of Peter Pan.  Guests are sure to enjoy the Meare with several miles of shallow water and islands which can be explored in the summer months by rowing boat or kayak.

A number of eateries, including the Dolphin Inn, The Kitchen and popular Meare café are within walking distance. The iconic House in the Clouds, hovering on the skyline and the shingle beach are just a stones throw away.

For the sporting visitors, prepare to be spoiled for choice! By staying at Corner Cottage, you are entitled to use the owner’s membership of Thorpeness Country Club. This means up to 2 hours of complimentary tennis per day in low season. In high season guests of Corner Cottage can apply for a weekly membership to enjoy tennis tournaments, children’s games and evening entertainment. There’s also an award winning 18-hole golf course in Thorpeness, which by staying at Corner Cottage, you are entitled to 20% off green fees.

First Impressions

Our first impressions of Corner Cottage were “WOW!”.  Not only was it so centrally located, it also comes with off-road private parking.  Unloading the car with three children was so simple and convenient.  We found the key safe easily and got inside without a hitch thanks to the trusty Best of Suffolk arrival details.  We were greeted by a welcoming entrance hall with plenty of space for coats and shoes, then the house just….kept….going!  We could not believe the amount of space!

Even better, when we explored the outside space, the wrap-around garden just kept giving!  One large picnic bench, a dining table and chairs, plus a further rattan corner sofa, a brick-built BBQ plus well-planted borders and covered bike storage…what more could you want?!

Welcome Pack

In the kitchen we found the generous welcome pack provided by the owner.  A bottle of Adnams wine and beer, plus Ghost Ship crisps meant we were greeted with delicious treats upon arrival.  With no shop in the village, we had stocked up on essentials on our way to Thorpeness.

Family Dining

After unpacking, we decided to spend our first night in our delightful holiday home.  I whipped up a quick tea in the well-equipped kitchen and we dined in the open plan living area.  The table has a bench, plus four chairs, meaning there was room for everyone at the table!

Bath Time!

Before long it was time for bed.  The family bathroom was put to the test with three children all needing a bath before bedtime!  Plenty of hot water, and very soft, fluffy white bath sheets for everyone meant bath time was enjoyed by all.

Flexible Accommodation

One of the great things about Corner Cottage is that the second bedroom can either be made up as a king or twin bedroom.  This makes it incredible flexible depending upon your group make up.  Couples, friends or families can request the second bedroom to be made up in accordance with your own requirements.

Even better, the third bedroom at Corner Cottage has a single bed with further pull-out single bed – ideal for two children sharing, or an adult and a child.

A Quiet Night In

After the children were fast asleep, Adam and I were able to enjoy the wonderfully comfortable living area at Corner Cottage with a glass of wine on the sofa.  Being able to relax and unwind in total peace and quiet really felt like a treat!

Breakfast Time!

After a great night’s sleep, we all awoke thinking the same thing….breakfast on the beach!  Adam put the well-equipped kitchen to use and made some bacon bagels wrapped in tin foil to keep warm.

Breakfast on Thorpeness Beach

We had brought a picnic blanket and cool bag with us, so loaded it up with the bagels, orange juice, plus plastic plates and cups so thoughtfully provided by Corner Cottage. The result?  Five very happy holidaymakers!

A Secluded Beach

Thorpeness beach is a 3 minute stroll from Corner Cottage (and that’s with little legs!).

We arrived just before 10am and couldn’t believe it…we had the beach to ourselves!

It was a warm, sunny day and so there was only one thing for it…paddling!

Beach Combing

After a little while, we decided to do some beach combing, to see what treasures we can find on this fantastic, pebbled beach.  We found quite a hoard!  From seaweeds, to a ‘mermaids purse’, to an oyster shell and even crab claws, Thorpeness beach did not disappoint.

The whole morning felt very wholesome, and had not cost a penny.  A great way to enjoy the Suffolk Coast as a family without breaking the bank.

The Dolphin Inn, Thorpeness

All that fresh sea air head really worked up some appetites!  We took the short stroll to The Dolphin Inn – a cracking village pub in Thorpeness that serves breakfasts, lunches and dinners to a very tasty standard!  Dog friendly (in the garden) and popular, so be sure to book.

The Dolphin

We were joined by Adam’s brother and enjoyed a family lunch that suited children and adults alike.

After our delicious meal, we decided to take the short stroll from The Dolphin to the Meare for ice creams for pudding!

Ice Creams at Thorpeness Meare

We absolutely could not believe our luck with the weather that day!  It’s like summer had arrived on the Suffolk coast and so we absolutely made the most of it.  You could either get ice cream from The Kitchen or The Meare Tearoom, which has a handy serving hatch.  We opted for the latter for speed and enjoyed our ice creams in the sunshine.

Fun and Games

After a fairly full-on day, we decided to head back to Corner Cottage and chill out for a bit.  Kindly provided by the owners, there’s a great selection of games for all to enjoy including a classic games compendium.  Whilst some of the family enjoyed a game of chess…

Others took the opportunity to have a play in the wonderful garden!

Family Snug

That evening it was the FA Cup Final, and with two football mad boys (make that four!) it was great to have the family snug with smart TV to be able to watch it in comfort.

After all the excitement of the football, it was soon time for bed as another exciting day in Thorpeness was on the horizon in the morning!

Pancakes for Breakfast

Whenever we’re on holiday, we always have pancakes for breakfast.  It’s a real treat and one for special occasions!  We started out with our favourite holiday breakfast and were talking about what lay ahead that day whilst enjoying the comfortable, family surroundings of Corner Cottage.

Thorpeness Meare

Although it was slightly overcast in the morning, it didn’t put us off heading off for another adventure!  The first activity of the day was hiring a rowing boat and heading out on Thorpeness Meare.  Open every day from Easter to October half term with no need to book.  You can choose from 30 minutes upwards and pay in accordance (cash only!).

Thorpeness Rowing Boat Meare

We decided we wanted to head out and explore, ideally mooring up at each of the different islands, so hired our lovely boat for an hour and a half.  Adam took to the oars, and off we went!

Our first stop was Wendy’s House.  As an avid fan of Peter Pan, Monty loved discovering all the little islands.

Before long, Adam had help with the oars…

And Monty had help with the rudder!

By far, our favourite spot to find was the castle!  We could have easily spent another hour and a half exploring, so enjoy this wonderful activity, enjoyed by all ages and get out there and find your inner Peter Pan!

Mini Golf

By the afternoon, the cloud had cleared up and we headed for Jiggers Mini Golf.  Located right by the Meare at Thorpeness Golf Club, it’s fun for everyone!

We loved that the mini golf was Thorpeness themed, with a mini ‘House in the Clouds’ – which proved quite challenging!  There’s also a mini Thorpeness windmill – equally as challenging!

With no need to book, and to just turn up and play for pocket money prices, we loved having this activity so close to Corner Cottage.

Great Garden

After all that fun, it meant there was just enough time for a few hours in the sunshine in the wonderful garden at Corner Cottage.

Time to Say Goodbye

After a great night’s sleep, it was time to check out.  Thank you Corner Cottage Thorpeness for the most amazing, family holiday!

If I Had More Time, I Would…

…Walk to Aldeburgh.

Only 1.5 miles down the road is the bustling seaside town of Aldeburgh.  We could easily break the walk up with a picnic, or fish and chips of course!  With an independent cinema, shops and so many wonderful eateries, there’s a lot only a short walk away.

…Play Tennis at Thorpeness Country Club.

Thorpeness Country Club

The owners of Corner Cottage had paid for annual membership of Thorpeness Country Club, meaning up to 2 hours of complimentary court-time in low season.  Our children are slightly too little for tennis, but older children and adults would find this thoroughly enjoyable and a real perk of staying at Corner Cottage.

…Play a Round of Golf
