Welcome to the latest edition of the Best of Suffolk ‘Tried and Tested’ blog series, featuring the charming 6 Coastguards Cottages – a pet-friendly holiday cottage in Aldeburgh with mesmerizing sea views!

Tried and Tested 6 Coastguards

When you think of Aldeburgh, no doubt the first thing that comes to mind is fish and chips, ice cream and a stroll on the beach.  All these things are fabulous, but as local Suffolk experts, we would like to show you the lesser-known side to the Victorian seaside town.

Ideal for walkers, bird-watchers, nature lovers, dog-owners, families and more…..Aldeburgh awaits!  Yes, the quaint coastal town has so much to offer beyond a traditional beach holiday.

Best of Suffolk is a holiday letting agency with a difference!  We’re able to offer a bespoke, local service.  Our small, friendly team all live in Suffolk and are more than happy to share our local expertise with you.  Our Tried and Tested blog series sees the team ‘try and test’ our properties with their family, friends and dogs.

Each blog provides first-hand experience of our stays and recommendations of things to do nearby.  From the property itself to knowledge of where’s good for food – we ‘try and test’ it all.

In this edition, Hannah (our Portfolio Manager) and her husband James enjoyed a gorgeous stay in 6 Coastguard Cottages in Aldeburgh for a fun and relaxing long weekend.  Here’s how they got on.

Pizza Perfection!

After unpacking and making ourselves at home, we decided to take a leisurely stroll around Aldeburgh, to look at the numerous eateries for a meal out.  With so much choice for restaurants, pubs, as well as the classic fish and chips, we decided to do something a little different!

Pizzeria White Hart Aldeburgh

The smell of the freshly-baked oak-fired pizzas as we walked past the White Hart proved too much!  We decided to go for dinner on the beach, courtesy of the Pizzeria at The White Hart.

Absolutely gorgeous stonebaked pizza’s were whipped up (chosen from a fantastic variety of toppings), with our pizza’s in hand we headed down to enjoy the pebbled beach, taking in the views.

Before arriving back at 6 Coastguard Cottages we headed into the local Adnams shop to pick up a bottle of fizz to enjoy that evening.

Cosy Living Room

The front door at 6 Coastguard Cottages leads into light and airy living/dining room.  There are two comfy chocolate brown leather sofas just waiting to be snuggled up on!  The oak floorboards and a wood-burning stove ensure that the cottage is both warm and cosy in the wintertime yet cool in the summer.

6 Coastguard Sitting Room

With windows at both ends of the room, it catches the coastal morning and evening sun.  Picture yourself relaxing here with a glass of wine in front of the fire, listening to your favourite music on the wireless speaker!  At the other end of the living space is an oak dining table and seating for six – ideal for family mealtimes!

Gorgeous Master Bedroom

We chose to use the Master bedroom which is located on the top floor of the property.  It could not be more ideal as it comes complete with an en-suite shower room.  This room also boasts the most amazing sea views across the rooftops – allowing you to wake up enjoying the sounds of the sea.

Breakfast on the Beach

After a beautiful night’s sleep, we prepared for the day ahead, starting with a pit stop at Munchies Café.

Munchies Aldeburgh

Due to Covid they were only offering takeway however this just meant that we would have to enjoy breakfast on the beach in the glorious sunshine (such a shame!!).  We treated ourselves to a bacon and sausage bap and hot drink, perfect to set us up for a day enjoying the local sights.

Thorpeness

The sun was out, the weather was glorious so we headed to Thorpeness on foot, making use of the footpath along the beach. This is a 2 mile walk, but with lots of wonderful views to enjoy, with the beach on one side and marshland on the other.

Boats beside the water

In Thorpeness, we headed to the Meare and hired a rowing boat for an hour. James was poised and ready with the ores, navigating us around the variety of islands to stop at.  Along with the variety of islands, you also get a wonderful view of the House in the Clouds, an iconic landmark of Thorpeness.

The Meare is the perfect activity for both adults and children to enjoy, with a café and ice-cream shop on site.

Cooking Up a Storm!

That evening I decided to put the fully-equipped kitchen to the test as I cooked tea.  With all of the mod-cons, utensils, and crockery you could ever need to whip up some fantastic treats, it did not disappoint.  The dishwasher came in handy and meant we had more time to sit back and relax.

Sunset Walk on the Marshes

Later that evening we headed out to make the most of the gorgeous sunset on offer, overlooking Aldeburgh Yacht club.  This lesser-known walk is ideal for dog-walkers or bird-watchers alike….or anyone who fancies a stroll with a view!  The weather certainly didn’t let us down and a beautiful sunset was enjoyed, along with an evening walk along the marshes.

Dunwich

On the morning of our final day, we set off for Dunwich.  Dunwich is a joy at any time of the year, relaxed yet within easy reach of civilisation tucked between Aldeburgh and Southwold on the Suffolk Coast.  You would hardly believe that the small unspoiled coastal village was once the capital of East Anglia around 1500 years ago!

Dunwich Heath

The village has a long stretch of shingle beach, ideal for a walk with the dog.  The popular pub, The Ship Inn, serving delicious food and local beverages; a tea room plus a fascinating museum open from April to October.

Dingle Hill Tea Rooms

After a lengthy walk on the beach and Dunwich heath, we indulged in a well-earned hot chocolate at Dingle Hill Team Rooms.
