When you think of Aldeburgh, no doubt the first thing that comes to mind is fish and chips, ice cream and a stroll on the beach. All these things are fabulous, but as local Suffolk experts, we would like to show you the lesser-known side to the Victorian seaside town.
Ideal for walkers, bird-watchers, nature lovers, dog-owners, families and more…..Aldeburgh awaits! Yes, the quaint coastal town has so much to offer beyond a traditional beach holiday.

Our small, friendly team all live in Suffolk and are more than happy to share our local expertise with you. Our Tried and Tested blog series sees the team ‘try and test’ our properties with their family, friends and dogs.
Each blog provides first-hand experience of our stays and recommendations of things to do nearby. From the property itself to knowledge of where’s good for food – we ‘try and test’ it all.
In this edition, Hannah (our Portfolio Manager) and her husband James enjoyed a gorgeous stay in 6 Coastguard Cottages in Aldeburgh for a fun and relaxing long weekend. Here’s how they got on.
6 Coastguard Cottages, Aldeburgh
6 Coastguard Cottages is a wonderful Aldeburgh pet-friendly holiday cottage that has been renovated to a very high standard and is ideal for people wishing to enjoy a blend of contemporary fittings, the incredible sea views, and the convenient location. Situated on The Terrace, it is just seconds from Aldeburgh’s High Street and a couple of minutes from the beach, perfect for family and friends to enjoy together! The cottage is on four floors and the feel throughout is of a boutique hotel, with sleek bathrooms, neutral colour schemes and well-designed spaces.
Dogs are more than welcome to stay at 6 Coastguard Cottages! With both the beach and marshes on your doorstep, it gives you a variety of fabulous walks to enjoy.
Location, Location, Location!
The location of 6 Coastguard Cottages is perfect, located at the top of the town steps, giving you beautiful sea views, whilst being just steps from the vibrant High Street, and pebbled beach.
Aldeburgh boasts a variety of both independent and national shops to enjoy, along with some truly fantastic pubs, restaurants, and cafes to enjoy. If you are a keen golfer, why not take advantage of Aldeburgh Golf Course on your doorstep, offering an 18 hole course.
For families, the independent Aldeburgh Cinema is perfect for those rainy afternoons, and the boating lake is the ideal way to enjoy the simple pleasure of watching sailing boats bob on the water.
Located just 25 minutes walk away is the village of Thorpeness which boasts the Meare – perfect for an afternoon row. There is a path that leads you from Aldeburgh to Thorpeness, along the beach, part way is the famous Maggi Hambling Scollop sculpture – the perfect photo opportunity!
6 Coastguard Cottages: First Impressions
Located along The Terrace is this gorgeous mid-terrace cottage, with a front garden. A picket gate leads you through to the stepped pathway down to the front door – leading into the living room. You are greeted into the bright and luxurious living room, making you instantly feel at home, with a welcome bottle of wine, biscuits and welcome folder waiting for you on the table.
After unpacking and making ourselves at home, we decided to take a leisurely stroll around Aldeburgh, to look at the numerous eateries for a meal out. With so much choice for restaurants, pubs, as well as the classic fish and chips, we decided to do something a little different!
The smell of the freshly-baked oak-fired pizzas as we walked past the White Hart proved too much! We decided to go for dinner on the beach, courtesy of the Pizzeria at The White Hart.
Absolutely gorgeous stonebaked pizza’s were whipped up (chosen from a fantastic variety of toppings), with our pizza’s in hand we headed down to enjoy the pebbled beach, taking in the views.
After our dinner we enjoyed a wonder round Aldeburgh, taking in the sights and enjoying the fresh sea air as we made the most of our home for the weekend.
Before arriving back at 6 Coastguard Cottages we headed into the local Adnams shop to pick up a bottle of fizz to enjoy that evening.
Cosy Living Room
The front door at 6 Coastguard Cottages leads into light and airy living/dining room. There are two comfy chocolate brown leather sofas just waiting to be snuggled up on! The oak floorboards and a wood-burning stove ensure that the cottage is both warm and cosy in the wintertime yet cool in the summer.
With windows at both ends of the room, it catches the coastal morning and evening sun. Picture yourself relaxing here with a glass of wine in front of the fire, listening to your favourite music on the wireless speaker! At the other end of the living space is an oak dining table and seating for six – ideal for family mealtimes!
Gorgeous Master Bedroom
We chose to use the Master bedroom which is located on the top floor of the property. It could not be more ideal as it comes complete with an en-suite shower room. This room also boasts the most amazing sea views across the rooftops – allowing you to wake up enjoying the sounds of the sea.
The king-size bed is wonderfully luxurious, with hotel-quality fresh white linens and fluffy towels provided it makes for the perfect nights’ sleep. The en-suite shower also provided fantastic hot water and amazing pressure!
Family-Friendly Holiday Cottage
6 Coastguard Cottages offers flexible, family accommodation. Whilst we didn’t need them on this trip, there is also a double bedroom, family bathroom and bunk room on the first floor, making the cottage perfect for families!
Ideal for Dogs
6 Coastguard Cottages is a pet-friendly holiday cottage and could not be better suited for four-legged friends! The beach is pretty much on your doorstep for ‘walkies’!
One of the amazing benefits of hiring 6 Coastguard Cottages is the incredible view! I don’t think you could tire of this.
Breakfast on the Beach
After a beautiful night’s sleep, we prepared for the day ahead, starting with a pit stop at Munchies Café.
Due to Covid they were only offering takeway however this just meant that we would have to enjoy breakfast on the beach in the glorious sunshine (such a shame!!). We treated ourselves to a bacon and sausage bap and hot drink, perfect to set us up for a day enjoying the local sights.
The sun was out, the weather was glorious so we headed to Thorpeness on foot, making use of the footpath along the beach. This is a 2 mile walk, but with lots of wonderful views to enjoy, with the beach on one side and marshland on the other.
In Thorpeness, we headed to the Meare and hired a rowing boat for an hour. James was poised and ready with the ores, navigating us around the variety of islands to stop at. Along with the variety of islands, you also get a wonderful view of the House in the Clouds, an iconic landmark of Thorpeness.
The Meare is the perfect activity for both adults and children to enjoy, with a café and ice-cream shop on site.
Cooking Up a Storm!
That evening I decided to put the fully-equipped kitchen to the test as I cooked tea. With all of the mod-cons, utensils, and crockery you could ever need to whip up some fantastic treats, it did not disappoint. The dishwasher came in handy and meant we had more time to sit back and relax.
Dining Al Fresco
6 Coastguard Cottage offers a variety of seating areas, with a small table and two chairs in the kitchen, outdoor table and chairs on the back balcony, large wooden table and chairs on the first floor and even two benches and coffee table in the front garden.
At 6 Coastguard Cottages, prepare to be spoiled for choice with outdoor space! There are small patio gardens to the front and rear of the property, ideally positioned to catch the morning and afternoon/evening sun. The front garden has wooden benches and a flower bed and at the rear the garden is a split level decking/pebble area with patio furniture and BBQ. There is a small outside storeroom with room to store small bikes, ideal for keen cyclists!
Sunset Walk on the Marshes
Later that evening we headed out to make the most of the gorgeous sunset on offer, overlooking Aldeburgh Yacht club. This lesser-known walk is ideal for dog-walkers or bird-watchers alike….or anyone who fancies a stroll with a view! The weather certainly didn’t let us down and a beautiful sunset was enjoyed, along with an evening walk along the marshes.
On the morning of our final day, we set off for Dunwich. Dunwich is a joy at any time of the year, relaxed yet within easy reach of civilisation tucked between Aldeburgh and Southwold on the Suffolk Coast. You would hardly believe that the small unspoiled coastal village was once the capital of East Anglia around 1500 years ago!
The village has a long stretch of shingle beach, ideal for a walk with the dog. The popular pub, The Ship Inn, serving delicious food and local beverages; a tea room plus a fascinating museum open from April to October.
Dingle Hill Tea Rooms
After a lengthy walk on the beach and Dunwich heath, we indulged in a well-earned hot chocolate at Dingle Hill Team Rooms.
