What to do in Snape?

Well, there’s something for everyone! From beautiful board walks, with wonderful bird life, to water sports on the river, music festivals and boutique shops.

Visit Snape Maltings

The Maltings has a complex of different art galleries, tempting restaurants and even more tempting shops! The House and Garden Shop is a main attraction, offering a range of luxury stylish collections. From furniture to gifts and soaps to lamps, the House and Garden shop has some fantastic items.

At the Maltings you can also enjoy offerings from the Food Hall, Samphire Boutique and Little Rascals.  Plus there are many more exciting pop up shops that sell fantastic produce.

What’s more, the first Saturday of every month there is wonderful Farmers Market. As such, businesses come from all over Suffolk to showcase their produce, from locally grown vegetables to locally sourced fish.

Enjoy the Concerts

The concerts at the Maltings grew out of the Aldeburgh Festival which was founded by Benjamin Britten.  The Maltings now hosts one of Europe’s leading classical musical events, Snape Proms.  The event attracts a range of world famous musicians, artists and Peppa Pig!

Iken Canoe

Iken Canoe is a family run business on the edge of the Alde between Snape and Aldeburgh. They offer a range water sports from canoes, kayaks and stand up paddle boards.  All of which are perfect to explore the nature that is around the river Alde.

Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival

During the weekend of 29-30 September 2019, the Maltings will be filled with local produce and celebrity chefs. As such, its a great day out for food and drink lovers from all over the country. Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival is hosting some fantastic celebrities this year for example the Great British Bake Off semi-finalist, Chetna Makan.

River Walks

Snape has all sorts of fantastic walks, and the River Alde itself is a haven for birdlife with its expansive estuary. As the River Alde is a tidal river, twice a day the river is filled by the incoming tide and enriched with wildlife.

The selection of walks which are most popular are as follows; Snape Warren is a 2 mile return walk, Sailors Path Walk from the Malting’s to Aldeburgh is 12 mile return walk. Parking can be found at the Maltings or on the Iken road car park.  Even better walk straight form the door of your Snape holiday cottage.

Boat Trips

Hop aboard the Sea Tradar during the summer months of July through to the end of October! Enjoy an hour long boat trip along the river towards Iken through the narrow waters.  When you’ve arrived, explore the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Discover an abundance of wildlife, along with the stunning views across the marshes.

The Plough and Sail

The Plough and Sail is set in Snape Maltings, and offers fantastic food from the pub classics to some alternatively delicious specials, which include local produce like crab, oysters and trout. With a wonderful outside area ideal for evening drinks or for Sunday lunches, your four legged friend will also be welcomed into The Plough and Sail.

The Golden Key

Another pub is The Golden Key, tucked away off the main road through Snape.  This relaxed cottage-style pub dates back to the 1600’s and focuses massively on using local and seasonal produce which in turn supports the local community.  Packed full of character, The Golden Key has open fires and the original beams; the ideal base for a cosy evening.

The Crown

The Crown is also very keen on local produce and has a large and sunny garden. It is an Adnams owned 15th Century smugglers inn with a wealth of history and legend attached to it.

Annette- Best of Suffolk’s Business Development Manager loves to hire a canoe at Iken Canoe with her family. They are often known to canoe to the Maltings and grab a quick bite to eat or a coffee.
