“Charming property , good location , comfortable and clean .”

In need of a little updating re furnishings and bed linen . We enjoyed our stay very much and felt very comfortable and noise from the road was minimal and not a problem for us . Good to have an allocated parking area and outside space . Ideal for walking into Woodbridge and along the Riverbank .

“Nice place but you need to update your audio and visual equipment.”

As out dated TV's weren't fit for purpose...sorry to be so blunt. Good job we had our laptops. Well eguipped kitchen though freezer needs a complete defrost and dishwasher needs replacing as rusty in the inside. But beds were comfortable. Could do with good outside lighting and trimming up the bushes in the garden. Our dog loved the the vast outdoor space Would stay here again if these issues were put right

“Lovely cosy cottage with some interesting history.”

Great location for exploring the area. We loved the safe and secure enclosed courtyard. Good to have parking provided and WiFi worked well, although the joining instructions in the book need updating with the new BT link. For a last minute booking, we were pleasantly surprised. The double mattress was very hard and uncomfortable and one of the singles we used was lumpy and both need replacing. There are no instructions in the cottage on what you can recycle and which bins to use - we had to Google Suffolk council to check. We found out that you can’t recycle glass as you have to take to a glass recycling centre- this type of info should be provided. There are also no instructions on what to do when leaving the property, ie where to leave used bedding, etc. No leaflets provided on places to visit. Could also do with providing some wine glasses. It would be nice if there was an outside light by the seating area in the courtyard so you didn’t have to sit in the dark.

“Sadly, such a beautiful cottage, but let down by lack of interior cleaning and decent beds.”

Ideal location for visiting Sutton Hoo, the Deben with all its attractions such as the Tide Mill and the reconstruction of the Saxon Burial ship, the Suffolk coast etc and great river views just a short walk away.

“The Old Forge is an excellent property and provides an all round enjoyable holiday experience.”

Well-located with easy access to main routes and within walking distance of towns and local attractions, it provides everything needed for a comfortable stay in an historic property. The kitchen is well-equipped and both TV and radio are provided in all of the rooms. There is good outdoor space, which we were able to use to the maximum with seven days of summer sun, and ample off-road parking. The preservation of original features is exceptional and a nice insight into the history of the village. Would highly recommend this property and would also return! Many thanks.

“A lovely cottage and very convenient for Sutton Hoo and others visitor attractions.”

We did find it unsuitable though due to the proximity to a busy road( due to safety of our dog) and noise. The double bed was impossible to sleep in due to the mattress being as hard as board. Given I Have severe joint problems it caused severe pain and lack of sleep. We had to cut the holiday short due to this. The dishwasher is severely corroded inside and left a residue of plastic particles from the wire basket covering meaning everything had to be hand rinsed again.

“Well located cottage with accommodation all on one floor of a sympathetically restored old forge in the centre of a lovely Suffolk village.”

There were a few quirks of the kind that make one smile with pleasure. The two banks of light (and fan) switches in the main room were a test at times! The absence of a socket on the right hand side of the (small) double bed meant that phones etc couldn’t be charged on both sides. The old fashioned clock on that side had a lovely calming tick! The large yard must be wonderful on warm days. We didn’t find it easy to know which rubbish went where as the colours of the bins and the title of the waste bins were unfamiliar to us. A kind neighbour explained the different days and times but didn’t seem clear about what went into ‘recycling’. We greatly appreciated the welcome treats. Surprised at how fast cars travel past in the village (all locals). Fish and chips were lovely.

“Lovely cosy cottage, good location close to local amenities.”

There's a local shop selling essentials, not far from the cottage. There's also a fish and chip shop at the top of the road. Two lovely pubs serving food within a 15min walk or 5mins in the car. The cottage is very oldie worldy, loads of antiques and photos of local area. Wonderful homily atmosphere and welcoming. There's a welcome pack available on arrival ie, tea, coffee, sugar, milk, fruit juice, eggs and as an extra for Christmas a bottle of mulled wine. The only down size is the beds, they were a bit on the small size. It was fine for me, but hubby and son are both tall and struggled as both over 6ft. Overall we had a wonderful stay, and due to location we were able to visit our daughter and husband every day. They moved to local army barracks in March, so it made our Christmas and daughters that we could visit for Christmas and still have they privacy. Thank you so much for an enjoyable stay and Christmas

The property

The Old Forge is a charming 17th Century brick and flint pet-friendly holiday cottage, located in Melton. The property is located in Melton, just a short walk away from the River Deben. Just a 5 minute drive away ( or a 20 minute walk along the river) is the Market Town of Woodbridge, full of wonderful idyllic shops, cafes/restaurants and history. The property is spread across the ground floor, with the original Old Forge still in place. The property boasts an open plan living/kitchen/dining room, with two bedrooms and shower room. To the rear is a private walled courtyard garden, with space for an car. Ground Floor Hard flooring runs throughout the ground floor, with the exception of the two bedrooms. Open Plan Living/Kitchen/Dining Room The Stable door leads into the spacious open plan area,with beautiful vaulted ceiling with beams, this particular part of the room is full of so much history, with the original forge still in place. Located high up are parts of a penny farthing and original tools used. The horseshoe shaped kitchen area with additional utility space is complete with everything you need for a self-catering break, this includes an electric cooker with four ring hob and extractor fan above, under counter fridge, small box freezer, slim-line dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, kettle and toaster. Located between the kitchen and living area is the circular dining table with four chairs, the perfect spot to sit and enjoy those culinary delights. To the far end of the room is the living area, with exposed flint wall. Comfortable seating is provided with a two seater and three seater sofa, with the addition of an arm chair. There is a TV with Freeview available for you to watch. In the summer months make good use of the stable door leading out onto the courtyard garden. Bedroom 1 Located at the front of the property, with metal framed double bed, bedside table and lamp, chest of drawers with TV above and built in wardrobe. Shower Room Located between bedroom 1 and bedroom 2, featuring a shower cubical, wash basin and WC. Bedroom 2 Located at the rear of the property, overlooking the courtyard garden. This room has two full size single beds, with bedside table and lamp and a wardrobe for your belongings. Courtyard Garden The Old Forge benefits from a private walled courtyard garden, with outdoor table and chairs. A perfect spot for some breakfast. There is space for 1 car in the drive, with space for an additional car in the courtyard garden.

Woodbridge 1.8 miles; Ipswich 10 miles; Lowestoft 36.2 miles.

Melton is a rural village resting between Ipswich and Lowestoft within Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is served by Melton railway station and is just a mile from the historic market town of Woodbridge. The village has a small selection of independent shops and a couple of popular pubs so is a great place to stop off to stock up on a few essentials and have a drink while enjoying the captivating surrounding countryside. There are a number of attractions on the doorstep including some fantastic golf courses for the grown-ups and Congo Rapids Adventure Golf for the not so grown-up, as well as the rural idyll that is Foxburrow Nature Reserve. Towns such as Woodbridge, Ipswich and Lowestoft are within a short drive and offer a great range of attractions and amenities.
