Autumn in Suffolk may seem a long way off as we head into summer, but the seasons soon come around. Whether you\u2019re staying in Suffolk\u2019s countryside or on the coast, Suffolk wears the colours of autumn well. A woodland walk sees trees losing their coats of auburn reds to make way for carpets of leaves to kick through as you pick berries from the burgeoning hedgerows. Meanwhile the steely seas are framed by golden sands and pale blue skies as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n

Autumn is a great time to head to Suffolk. With less visitors at this time of year, the beaches are emptier and perfect for a stroll with your dog \u2013 especially as most beaches are open to dogs from 1 October. What\u2019s more, as the cooler weather takes hold, crackling fires and a warm welcome from our country pubs are always a great way to end a walk in the wild.<\/p>\n

So, what makes Suffolk so special for an autumn getaway this year? Whether you\u2019re looking for foodie festivals, spooky spectacles or family fun, we\u2019ve found ten things you really won\u2019t want to miss.<\/p>\n

Four for foodies<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Great Framlingham Sausage Festival<\/a>, on Sunday 14 October, is a great day out for all the family. Join sausage makers as they take over the town of Framlingham to sizzle sausages for you to taste, try out free workshops and amazing activities and browse your way around a range of stalls too.<\/p>\n

Other festivals for foodies this season include Newmarket Food and Drink Festival<\/a> on 15 and 16 September, Woodbridge Shuck Shellfish Festival<\/a> on 22 and 23 September and Aldeburgh Food Festival<\/a> on 29 and 30 September.<\/p>\n

Three for thrillseekers<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scaresville<\/a> a haunted village in the grounds of\u00a0Kentwell Hall<\/a>\u00a0in Long Melford, Suffolk takes place every autumn. Touted as one of\u00a0Britain’s most original, top scare attractions, we\u2019re sure it\u2019ll get your spine tingling. Remember, though, it\u2019s not for those under 14 years of age or for people who are squeamish, pregnant, claustrophobic, frail\u00a0or faint-hearted.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re heading to Suffolk with the family and fancy a little Halloween fun, why not try out the Spooky Trail at Landguard Fort<\/a> in Felixstowe from 20 to 26 October. Alternatively, head to Hollow Trees Farm<\/a> in Semer, near Hadleigh, for a spooky adventure for the younger ones, keep an eye on their events page for details of when this will take place.<\/p>\n

Two for tea<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you love afternoon tea, you\u2019ll love afternoon tea in quintessential Lavenham. The 15th<\/sup> century Swan Hotel<\/a> is situated in the heart of the village and offers either Traditional or Gentleman\u2019s Tea, or their fabulously decadent High Tea. Alternatively, head toward Bury St Edmunds for a visit to the splendid Ickworth House<\/a>, and take in afternoon tea while you\u2019re there in The Ickworth Hotel.<\/p>\n

One for the wild<\/strong><\/p>\n

Get back to basics and nurture your need for nature with a ramble in the countryside and foraging for berries. If you\u2019d like something more organised, RSPB Minsmere makes for a great wildlife destination, with a host of activities on offer. And why not arrange a 4×4 ride while you\u2019re there? A great way for small groups of no more than four to explore the reserve and see areas not normally accessible to visitors, Minsmere 4×4 safaris must be booked at least one week ahead<\/a>.<\/p>\n
