A wander through Woodbridge

When it comes to market towns with a little bit of everything that’s great in Suffolk, you’d be hard pushed to beat Woodbridge.

Situated on the banks of the River Deben, this lively town combines coastal life with countryside charm and, whatever you love to do while you’re on holiday, Woodbridge can cater for you.

Shopping, fine eateries, riverside walks and more – it’s all within walking distance when you’re in Woodbridge. And if you’re visiting with the car, there’s lots to see just a short drive away, too.

Market Hill

Market Hill was, for centuries, the very heart of Woodbridge and it still regularly hosts markets that include seasonal food, crafts, vintage products and more.

The area around Market Hill is also home to a range of independent shops. Meander down Theatre Street to find stylish homewares and stunning fashion. You can also while away time browsing through antiques or admiring craftmanship in action at Woodbridge Violins.

And there’s also plenty to choose from here for foodies. The Galley restaurant offers fine dining in a relaxed and beautiful setting, with excellent service. Next door, the King’s Head Inn, which dates back to the 15th century, is a friendly town centre pub offering classic pub food and a locally famous Mutt’s Menu for visiting dogs too.

The Thoroughfare

Head down to the Thoroughfare and you’ll find the vibrant shopping centre of Woodbridge. A finalist in the 2018 Great British High Street Awards, The Thoroughfare boasts a range of independent boutiques that are nestled closely with some of the best loved British brands. It’s well worth looking above the shop frontage too, to see the interesting architecture all along the road.

To make sure you don’t drop from your shop, there are plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat along the Thoroughfare too. At the crossroads with Church Street, Cumberland Street and Quay Street, you’ll find a choice on every corner. Go Italian at Prezzo, modern at East Coast Diner, Chinese at the Golden Panda or choose the great British pub at the Crown at Woodbridge, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

Further down the road, there are a number of great coffee shops, including the locally loved artisan coffee house and bar – Honey + Harvey.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer to take away a basket packed with the perfect ingredients to make your favourite meal back at your holiday home, Woodbridge Deli, on New Street, offers freshly cooked pies, sausage rolls, pasties and paninis, as well as local produce, cheese and fine ingredients from around the globe.

Along the Quayside

On the Quayside in Woodbridge you’ll find the charming station, as well as the newly refurbished Deben Leisure Centre. Just next to the station, the Adnams Woodbridge Store offers a range of kitchenware, as well as the Suffolk-brewed beer, spirits and wine.

To the other side of the station, the Riverside Theatre and Cinema are situated together with the award winning, Michelin rated Riverside Restaurant, open daily – except for Sunday evenings – for lunch and for dinner.

The Tide Mill

The Tide Mill living museum is one of Woodbridge’s most iconic attractions. It’s working water mill is one of the very first tide mills in England. Here, guides will take you around a range of interactive activities, including computer generated imagery, helping you to discover how the mill used to work. The Mill also hosts regular events, so it’s well worth checking what’s on.

From here, enjoy a coffee on the waterfront.

Out of Town

If you have time, and the means, there’s lots to see just outside Woodbridge and it’s a great base to explore Suffolk. One of the best-loved visitor attractions nearby is the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo, which is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in the UK. Discover ancient burial mounds and enjoy the incredible story of a buried Anglo-Saxon king, in his ship with his treasured possessions.

Sutton Hoo is currently undergoing a renovation project and plans to re-open in Easter 2019.
