Autumn is the time for culture in Suffolk; as the leaves turn from luscious green to glowing gold, we turn to warm words, comforting food and soothing music to see us through the cooler time of year. Just like the leaves, Suffolk is no less lively and colourful in this season, it is rich and cultured.

  • November sees the return of the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival, and this year it runs for its 22nd year. The charming seaside town of Aldeburgh is the perfect setting, as it invites you to reflect on the poetic words and inspires you even further.

    The festival consists of a wonderful array of readings, workshops and the occasional quiz, and with world class writers from all over the world gathering to deliver it, it is sure to enhance anyone’s knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of poetry.   • Just along the coast, Southwold also offers its share of literary esteem, with �Ways With Words�, the Southwold Literature Festival. The selection of subjects presented at this festival is extremely varied and there is sure to be something to suit every taste.

    From gardening to the world of journalism, and from the War to religion, it�s not just poetry but biography and other forms of literature explored and presented here. The Southwold Literature Festival runs from 11-15 November and more information can be found at www.wayswithwords.co.uk.

  • Snape Maltings lies in a peaceful and inspiring setting, and aswell as being perfect for a refreshing walk to spot wildlife and breathe in the clean air, it offers a programme of events for both adults and children that will delight the whole family.

    The reindeer arrive at Snape Maltings on Saturday 4th December, you can go and meet them and then have a warming hot chocolate in the tea room!

  • The Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre lights up the town from 26-28 November, and is a lovely way to begin the festive season. There are stalls, markets and various musical treats including the Bury St Edmunds Concert Band who will be delivering a heart warming concert on the Saturday afternoon, 1-2pm.

  • Get your gloves and sparklers and head down to one of the many firework displays taking place around Suffolk on the weekend of 5th November. Heveningham Hall holds a display and bonfire on Saturday 6th November, and a little further inland the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket offers a charming gathering in their grounds, with a bonfire and mini funfair.

  • Aldeburgh Music present a sparkling programme of festive music and readings enough to lift anyone’s spirits in their Christmas Concert on Friday 10th December. More information can be found at www.aldeburgh.co.uk.

  • Jimmy’s Farm has recently opened a new restaurant in one of their barns, which is worth a visit! They are also holding a Christmas Festival 4-5 December which is sure to put you in the festive spirit!

  • Join the festivities and start the Christmas season in a jolly way, with the switching on of the Christmas Lights in Aldeburgh on 26th November. If this doesn’t quench your thirst for Christmas cheer, there’s also the Southwold Christmas Lights Switch-On, on 3rd December.

  • The medieval town of Lavenham becomes an array of sparkling lights, warm food and entertaining music for its Christmas Street Fair 10-11 December, a heart-warming walk around a lovely town not to be missed!
