1 South Cottages, The Dunes, Thorpeness
A delightful, light and airy one bedroom period cottage which can be booked with or without a separate contemporary guest annex situated very close to the beach in Thorpeness, overlooking the famous Meare boating lake. It is ideal for couples requiring stylish accommodation in this very popular village.
The accommodation in the main cottage:
The living room has beautiful views across The Meare and has two leather sofas, natural coir carpet, flat screen TV, Sky freesat, and DVD/CD player.
In the kitchen/diner there’s a beautiful handmade kitchen with a Smeg range cooker, fridge, dishwasher, microwave and a dining table to seat four people.
The cottage’s original stairs (a little steep and narrow) from the kitchen lead up to:
Bedroom 1 with a handmade oak king size bed and natural coir flooring and two windows, one of which has lovely views of The Meare and the other a glimpse of the sea.
Bathroom 1 is a large family bathroom with a magnificent freestanding bath, separate shower, sink and w.c. Outside is a patio over which there is access to two further cottages.
At the rear of the patio is a separate annex building which has a double bedroom and wet room. This can be booked in addition to the main cottage for a supplement of just 30% of the rental price for the main cottage.
Bedroom 2 with a bespoke double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside tables, a natural coir carpet and window looking onto the patio.
Bathroom 2 has a contemporary wet-room with a large tiled shower, sink and w.c.
The entrance hallway in the Annex has a wall cupboard which houses a washing machine and freezer.
Outside:
There are patios to the front and rear of the cottage with an outdoor table and chairs to seat four. The front patio is particularly appealing with pretty views across Thorpeness Meare.
About the area
Thorpeness is a mile and a half along the beach from Aldeburgh and is a charming holiday village largely designed by the Scottish playwright and barrister Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie a century ago. He decided to create an idyllic model seaside village, inspired by the writings of JM Barrie, author of Peter Pan.
The village has a Meare (local for lake) and its several miles of shallow water can be explored in the summer time by rowing boat. A short walk from the cottage is the Thorpeness Country Club and here the tennis courts and games rooms are often available during half term holidays as well as the summer months.
Also close by is the Thorpeness heathland golf course. The area is ideal for cycling and walking, both along the coast and inland countryside. It's a short walk to the famous ‘House in the Clouds’ and Thorpeness windmill, both close to the Meare. There are a number of shops and eateries including The Dolphin Inn, and an award-winning café next to the Meare (opening times vary according to the time of year).
