Child friendly holiday cottage in Aldeburgh

“Fantastic child friendly place with that bit of luxury to make the holiday special. Thank you.”

This is a spectacular contemporary conversion of a former coach house with fascinating historic connections: built in 1851 it was once owned by Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, the first female medical doctor and first female mayor in England.  She and her famous suffragette sister Millicent Fawcett both grew up next door and the family’s horses were stabled here.

This architect-designed self catering accommodation is ideal for both groups of friends and families, with it’s stylish dining, kitchen and living facilities and location just a few minutes walk from the High Street in Aldeburgh. It has cathedral-like high ceilings downstairs and a calm, restful minimalist atmosphere.

On the ground floor there’s a large contemporary open plan space with areas for seating, dining and the kitchen, with a double height ceiling and large glass doors leading out to a patio and off road parking. Also on the ground floor is a shower room.   The first floor has three bedrooms (2 double and 1 single), an en-suite shower room and a family bathroom and ladder steps leading up to a outside roof-well terrace with a table and chairs and views back into this wonderful building. Outside there's a pretty walled garden patio catching the south and west sun.

The front door leads into a hallway with space to hang coats and leave boots.

Open plan living/dining/kitchen room:

This spectacular room is full height in areas with original beams and a terracotta floor.

Living area:  There are two 2-seater sofas and a long built-in seat with cushions around a large coffee table in front of a lovely wood-burning stove.  There’s a TV with Sky Freeview, a DVD player and an Ipod docker.

Dining area: There’s a large modern white table and chairs with a chandelier directly above.

Kitchen area: The handmade fitted kitchen has units on three sides and a central island.  There’s a four ring gas hob, an integrated oven and a combination microwave.  The kitchen has three sinks, a dishwasher, and a fridge and freezer.  There’s also a washing machine in a cupboard in the hallway.

Shower room:  With a shower, hand basin and w.c. This is located off the hallway to the front door.

First floor:

Stairs from the open plan area lead up to a gallery landing – the landing has a balcony down one side that looks down to the open plan living space and gives a feeling of light and space.  Stairgates can be provided at the top and bottom of the stairs.

Bedroom 1: A room with a double bed, bedside tables, chest of drawers and built in wardrobe.  There’s a dormer window, sloping ceiling and an ensuite shower room.

Ensuite to Bedroom 1: With a shower, w.c. and a hand basin.

Bedroom 2: A single bedroom with a bedside table and a wardrobe. A truckle bed is also available on request although circulation space in the room is limited when it is out.  There’s a small heritage velux window in the sloping ceiling.

Bedroom 3: This room has a double bed, a bedside table, a chest of drawers and a built-in wardrobe.  There’s a large dormer window in the sloping ceiling.

Family bathroom:  There’s a bath, a w.c. and a hand basin.

Play area:  At the end of the landing there’s an open play area with bean bags and chunky lego for small people to play with.

Top floor terrace:  There are ladder steps to a glass door (bob down as you go through!) that opens up to an enclosed terrace with views back into the house.

Outside:  There's a pretty walled garden patio catching the south and west sun with a table and chairs for outside dining and is reached from the open plan area through two large glass doors.  There is off-road parking for two vehicles.  With the agreement of the owners it may be possible to park one or two further cars off road.

This large self-catering house is located on Alde Lane, just a short walk from Aldeburgh High Street and the beach.  The nearest bit of the High Street is the north end, near the newsagents and Co-op supermarket.  The town’s very popular restaurants, cafes and independent shops, and of course the beach are just a short walk away.

All prices include 100% cotton bed linen and towels, heating and electricity plus a welcome bottle of wine and biscuits to help you get your break off to a relaxing start.

The property is equipped with gas central heating, a four ring gas hob and electric ovens, a fridge and freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, flat screen TV, Sky Free-sat, WiFi broadband access and telephone, DVD player, and an Ipod docker.  A travel cot, a high chair and two stairgates are available on request.
