“What a wonderful little cottage with a fabulous garden.”
Hidden Cottage is full of wonderful charm and character and is tucked away behind its sister cottage Tiger Villa on the south end of Aldeburgh's popular High Street, close to the beach. This period gem of a fisherman's cottage has been lovingly restored, along with its sister Tiger Villa, and you’d never know that this Georgian cottage was almost derelict in 2008.
The owners have successfully preserved the unique history and character of the house – they've used traditional lime wash paints on the walls and saved many period features at the house.
Downstairs you'll find a kitchen/dining room with patio doors out to a large back garden, and a cosy living room with a period range stove for extra winter warmth. Upstairs there's a bedroom with a king size bed and a large bathroom with a roll top bath and separate shower.
The house has a quirky layout and extremely steep stairs (more like a ladder than normal stairs) so please be aware you will need to be quite agile to enjoy the property to the full.
Ground floor:
The wide patio doors lead straight into the kitchen diner, with the stairs leading up the bedroom and door to the right leading to the living room.
Living room: This cosy room has a lovely period range stove that burns charcoal (there's even a cast iron kettle for it if you fancy making your tea the old fashioned way!), original brick floor, sofa and armchair, rug and window with overlooking the rear patio garden. There's a flat screen TV, DVD player, and Ipod docker.
Kitchen: With hand-made painted wooden kitchen units, a cooker with a gas hob and electric oven, a dishwasher, fridge and microwave. There is also a small table and chairs and patio doors to the back garden.
First floor:
Very steep narrow ladder stairs lead from a door in the kitchen directly into the bedroom above.
Bedroom: A hand-made wooden king size bed with a comfortable memory foam mattress. The room has a wonderful sash window and large casement window looking towards Aldeburgh's marshes, original pine floor boards and bedside tables.
Bathroom: There's a roll top bath, separate shower, a w.c., hand basin and a wardrobe.
Outside: There's a patio garden with a roofed area for sheltered barbeques and a table and chairs. On road parking is usually available nearby on the High Street and adjoining side streets.
Situated in the High Street at Aldeburgh, this property is ideally situated if you'd like to be close to the town's popular shops and restaurants. The beach is a two minute walk away. Aldeburgh is also a great base for exploring the surrounding Suffolk countryside.
All prices include 100% cotton bed linen and towels, heating and electricity plus a welcome bottle of wine and biscuits to help you get your break off to a relaxing start.
The accommodation is equipped with gas central heating throughout, a range stove that can be lit for extra warmth, a flat screen TV, DVD player, Ipod docker, gas hob and electric oven, microwave, slimline dishwasher, and a fridge with freezer compartment.
Restrictions: Sorry no smoking, pets or unaccompanied teenagers permitted at the property. The steep stairs mean this property isn’t suitable for babies or those with limited mobility.
Please also note that the ceiling height within the kitchen is in places limited to around 6' so guests of a taller nature will have to mind their heads!
This historic cottage is painted with a traditional limewash inside and out to allow the property to breath. The limewash has a chalky powder finish and if you brush against it it may leave some residue on your clothing which is easily brushed off.
