Suffolk self-catering holiday accommodation in Long Melford.

This Suffolk holiday cottage has the most wonderful atmosphere and is ideal for weekends away.  Together with its prime position in the medieval village of Long Melford and its extraordinary garden, it is a great place to stay at any time of the year.  The village is one of Suffolk’s famous ‘Wool Towns’ and here you’ll find award-winning restaurants, pubs and all the joys of independent bakeries and butchers, galleries and boutiques.

Guests arriving at Gate Cottage can park right outside and will enter the property via its front door, from where they'll come into the snug sitting room with a cosy open fire, beyond which lie the kitchen and bathroom.  Up the charming cottage stairs lie the two bedrooms (one small double, one single), both overlooking the front of the property.  Outside is a courtyard sitting area and large garden mainly laid to lawn with herb and vegetable plots beyond.

GROUND FLOOR: The front door leads into a small living room.

LIVING ROOM:  This cosy room may be small, but its décor and atmosphere make it a relaxing place to rest and unwind.  There’s a two-seater sofa and a matching armchair, an original open fireplace, a flat screen TV, DVD player and an iPod docking station.

HALLWAY AND CUPBOARD:  A short hallway runs past the stairs to the kitchen/dining room and has an under stairs cupboard where you’ll find a washing machine tucked out of the way.

KITCHEN/DINING ROOM: Here features include an original fire surround and framed historic documents about the history of the house.  The fitted kitchen has an electric hob, oven and grill and a fridge with a freezer compartment.  There’s a small round wooden table and three chairs. Beyond this is a small lobby leading to the bathroom and back door.

BATHROOM: There is a bath with a shower over it, a W.C. and a hand basin.

FIRST FLOOR: Steep stairs with a rope handrail lead from the hallway, with two turns, one to the left and one to the right leading up to a little first floor landing.

BEDROOM 1:  A lovely double aspect bedroom with a small double bed (4ft wide, six inches narrower than a standard double) at one end, an antique chest of drawers, a dressing table and a rail with coat hangers.  It has views over the garden and fields beyond to the rear, and over the street to the front of the property.

BEDROOM 2:  This good size bedroom has a single bed, a chest of drawers, a chair, and a large walk-in wardrobe.

WRITERS STUDIO: Through the back door and across a small courtyard you’ll find a charming rustic artists studio, ideal for relaxing, writing and drawing on warm days!

OUTSIDE:  This charming Suffolk holiday let has several garden areas for you to enjoy: a small courtyard which is enclosed with a table and chairs just outside the back door; a larger courtyard with a table and chairs and many plants including fragrant herbs; and a spacious garden mostly laid to lawn with a vegetable garden.  Beyond this are several public footpaths across fields to Long Melford and Liston.  There is also a practical storage area where bicycles can be stored.  There is off-road parking immediately outside the front of the cottage by the road.  The parking is shared with neighbouring cottages but there is usually plenty of space to park.  The discreet owners live next door to the property above the ‘The Gate’ a wonderful antique shop.

'WINTER WARMER' BOOKINGS: Book a winter break at Gate Cottage and you'll be treated by the owners to some warming extras including: the open fire lit ready for your arrival, the option of cosy cotton soft flannel bed linen, and mulled wine ready to heat on the stove or fire when you arrive.  You can book these lovely options on the online booking form.

Long Melford is rightly popular for its glorious historic buildings and magnificent wool church, antique shops, good restaurants, takeaways, art galleries and fashion boutiques.

For eating in, there’s a Co-op supermarket, the highly renowned Ruse & Son butchers, a bakers, a Deli and traditional fish & chip shop. Several takeaways will deliver to the holiday cottage. You are spoilt for choice when eating out too, with The Black Lion, two Indian restaurants all close by, pubs and hotels and a Chinese just 3 miles away in Sudbury. The nearest train station is at Sudbury, just over 3 miles away.

Our five top tips for exploring and enjoying the area:

1. Enjoy a walk across fields and lanes to Long Melford and have lunch in one of the excellent pubs and restaurants.

2. Spend a day at the historic moated Tudor Kentwell Hall. Through the summer there are re-creations of everyday life in Tudor times, where Kentwell is inhabited by up to 250 men, women and children who live, act, talk and dress as if still living in Tudor times.

3. Take a trip to the beautiful ‘Wool Towns’ of Clare, and Cavendish and enjoy lunch in The George pub on The Green at Cavendish.

4. Visit the magnificent Elizabethan house Melford Hall, owned by the National Trust. The children’s writer Beatrix Potter visited here on several occasions and painted some of her paintings here, a collection of which can still be seen here. The annual fireworks display in the grounds is a very popular event.

5. Enjoy a stroll around the historic medieval wool town of Lavenham and enjoy afternoon tea at The Swan Hotel.

All prices include 100% cotton bed linen, towels, heating and electricity plus a welcome bottle of wine and biscuits to help you get your break off to a relaxing start.

This self-catering accommodation is equipped with electric storage heaters and appliances include a TV with FreeSat channels, a DVD player, and an iPod docking station. The kitchen appliances include an electric hob, grill and oven, a fridge with freezer compartment and a washing machine (please note that there is no dishwasher).  There is carpet in the living room and bedrooms, lino in the kitchen, and cork tiles in the bathroom.

Sorry, no smoking, or unaccompanied teenagers.

There is no dishwasher, but with some many good pubs and restaurants within a short walk we hope you won’t mind!

The stairs are quite steep so may be unsuitable for the elderly or very small children.

Bedroom 1 has a 4-foot wide bed; this is just 6 inches less than a standard double.

The cottage is on the Long Melford to Cavendish road, and so in common with many of our period cottages with original sash windows in towns and villages you should expect some traffic noise.

Please note that the two courtyard gardens & small cottage garden all have gates  -  the larger acre garden beyond is not fully fenced. Please note that our accommodation is only suitable for smaller dogs.
