Food and Drink in Suffolk

Eating well during your stay at one of our Best of Suffolk holiday cottages is one of the great pleasures of coming to Suffolk!  Whether you choose to eat at your holiday accommodation or treat yourself to meals out there are many excellent local produce shops, pubs and restaurants in the area.

Here are some of our personal favourites:

Eating Out

Thorpeness Brasserie, Thorpeness – a trendy family-friendly and pet-friendly eatery serving delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners, opposite The Meare.  Why not park your car at Aldeburgh and walk the mile and a half along the coastal path to it.

The Lighthouse, Aldeburgh - the best known of Aldeburgh's restaurants, this bistro style fish restaurant uses local produce where possible.

Regatta, Aldeburgh - a family-friendly restaurant on Aldeburgh's High Street with regular ‘Gourmet Nights’ ranging from a local lobster and crab evening to Thai and Italian evenings.

The Bell Hotel, Saxmundham - Using fresh local ingredients, enjoy traditional English and French dishes here.

The Trinity at the Crown and Castle, Orford - Not cheap but serves excellent food in contemporary surroundings. It's owned by TV presenter and food writer Ruth Watson and featured on the TV series ‘Jamie's Kitchen’.

Butley Orford Oysterage, Orford - Simple canteen style restaurant serving delightfully unfussy fish dishes with daily specials advertised on a chalk board.

The Bell Inn, Walberswick - Here you'll find a child-friendly relaxed atmosphere with open fire. In the winter it often sells a variety of mulled drinks, perfect for warming up if you're passing by on a walk to Dunwich or Southwold.

The Anchor, Walberswick - Serving fresh, seasonal local produce.

The Harbour Inn, Southwold - Although it's strictly in Southwold, it's an easy walk from Walberswick crossing over the river by footbridge or using the local ferry - a rowing boat. It serves a wide range of foods and our favourite by far is the ‘beer batter’ fish and chips wrapped in newspaper.

White Horse, Sibton - A delightful country pub serving ‘gastro’ food. There's a cosy fire in the winter and a terrace for summer outdoor dining.

Light bites

Beach café, Dunwich - For straight-forward fish and chips and a pot of tea, you can't go far wrong at this large old fashioned café which is open in the summer months.

Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop - Join the queue for some of the best fish and chips on the East Coast!

Kathy’s Café, Aldeburgh – Café behind Smith’s Bakery serving home-cooked food and good cappuccinos.

Munchies, Aldeburgh - Café-bar specialising in local produce. Great for breakfasts, toasted paninis and good coffee.

The Café at Dunwich Heath - A National Trust owned café serving hot foods and ice creams in old coastguard cottages on the cliff above the beach.

Café on Southwold Pier - Walk on by the first café on the pier and about halfway down you'll find a delightful café with bar stools and tables looking out to the sea. Serves coffee, local beers, pastries and sandwiches. (Don't miss the quirky "Under The Pier Show" whilst you are there).

Eating in

Carley and Webb, Framlingham and Woodbridge - A delicatessen specialising in organic and local foods and handmade chocolates.

Friday Street Farm Shop, Friday Street - Farm shop selling masses of local produce.

Salters Family Butchers, Aldeburgh - much of the free range produce they sell comes from 30 mile radius of Aldeburgh.

Snape Maltings, Snape - Visit the monthly farmers market on the banks of the River Alde.

JR Creasey butchers, Peasenhall - Pick up your home cured and smoked bacons and a range of game in season here plus locally produced beef, pork, lamb and free range chicken.

Eat Anglia, Earl Soham - Village shop and café with a passion for high quality local produce.

Emmetts shop, Peasenhall - Suffolk hams and bacon are cured on the premises using traditional methods.

Lawsons Delicatessen, Aldeburgh - Local and interesting organic produce plus tasty frozen meals and picnic ideas.

Jimmy's Farm, Wherstead - Visit the farm made famous by the TV series Jimmy's Farm. As well as a farm shop there's a monthly farmers market on the first Saturday of the month.

Suffolk Food Hall, Wherstead - Tour the vineyards and try one of the award-winning local wines.

Shawsgate Vineyard, Framlingham - Tour the vineyards and try one of the award-winning local wines.

Pinneys of Orford - Produce smoked on site, from fish to sausages!
